AUSTIN — Two die-hard Kinky Friedman supporters teamed up to buy two pairs of boots from a Rose Bowl wager between Gov. Rick Perry and his California counterpart, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Paul D. Hines and his son Sam wanted Schwarzenegger's boots, but the pairs were auctioned as a group, and the San Antonio family didn't think they would get them at first.
The elder Hines is active in Friedman's independent gubernatorial campaign and drives a red-white-and-blue Plymouth Prowler advertising the candidate's Web site, kinkyfriedman.com. He called Dean Barkley, Friedman's campaign manager, to see if he could fit into Perry's boots, size 111/2.
He could, and together they spent $4,050 for the two pairs.
The two Republican governors each wagered a pair of their own boots for the football game.
They were auctioned on eBay to raise money for the Texas Disaster Relief Fund, which assists families affected by hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
"Wear these boots proudly," Perry said, handing over the footwear in a brief photo opportunity. "I think there is some Arnold sweat on these."
Hines manages San Antonio Telephone Co. Inc. in Universal City, which installs commercial telecommunications networks. His son is a seventh-grader at Heritage Middle School.
Barkley was happy with his half of the purchase because "it is a nice chance to fill the governor's boots and probably the cheapest way."
