Exxon breaks own record for biggest-ever profit

Results boosted by high oil prices but fall short of expectations

MSNBC staff and news service reports
updated 1:52 p.m. ET, Thurs., July. 31, 2008

Fueled by a record surge in oil prices, Exxon Mobil Corp. reported second-quarter earnings of $11.68 billion Thursday, the biggest quarterly profit ever by any U.S. corporation. But the results were well short of Wall Street expectations and its shares fell.
With oil prices more than double last year’s levels, Exxon Mobil’s revenue rose 40 percent to $138.1 billion from last year’s second quarter. Natural gas prices were significantly higher too.
But those higher crude prices squeezed profits from Exxon Mobil’s businesses that rely on crude oil as a raw material, including gasoline refining and chemical production.

Sheikh flies Lamborghini 6,500 miles to Britain for oil change

RICH Arab sent his Lamborghini on a 6,500-mile round trip to Britain for a service.
The £190,000 supercar was put on a scheduled flight from Qatar to Heathrow – then flown BACK after the oil check.

Money was no object as the flight would have cost the owner – thought to be a Sheikh – around £20,000.

The move sparked fury from green campaigners.

An airport worker said: “This car doesn’t have a carbon footprint – more of a crater.”

The overall cost of sending the Lamborghini to London for the oil change would have cost more than £23,000.

His black-and-gold supercar costs £3,552 to service at an approved dealer – on top of the £20,000 to freight from Qatar to Britain.

The Murciélago LP640 – driven by Batman in movie The Dark Knight – arrived from the Middle Eastern country on Friday.

It cleared customs and was trucked to specialist mechanics in London for the service.

On Monday it was flown back 3,250 miles to the oil-rich state where it was collected by the owner.

A cargo handler at Heathrow blasted the car’s environmental damage.
He said: “It would have been far more efficient to fly mechanics out there.”

And Jenny Evans, of pressure group Plane Stupid, said: “This horrifies me. It is another example of how rich people exploit and pollute the planet because of their money.”

She said the role of the super-wealthy in climate change was not properly recognised – while poor people were rapped for going on holiday.

Friends of the Earth’s transport campaigner Richard Dyer said: “Flying a car thousands of miles for a service is ludicrous when planes are one of the most polluting ways to transport goods. We urge the individual to get their car serviced closer to home.”

But David Price, of Lamborghini Club UK, said: “If an owner wants to service his car in that way, it is his choice.

“I’m not surprised. Thankfully the age of excess in some areas continues.”

Lamborghini UK spokeswoman Juliet Jarvis said there could be “kudos” for a Middle Eastern owner in servicing a car in London.

She said the exclusive Italian brand had a network of authorised dealers around the world – and most cars were looked after in the country where they were bought.
But she added: “This sort of thing is not unheard of.”

Qatar Airways confirmed it carried the Lamborghini.

The cars are popular with celebs including Rod Stewart and David Beckham

"But the results were well short of Wall Street expectations and its shares fell."

Why do you think that would happen?? dont get caught up in the numbers. The number sounds huge, but think of the global scale of the company and its operations. It provides more fuel energy, refining, research and development to everything in our universe than all others combined. If you look at the PERCENTAGE of profit with operating expense and revenue, you will see that it is actually quite a small profit margin. If you want something to get mad at, then scream at the congress who promised lower fuel prices in the "first 100 days" that the democrats took over. On a percentage basis, the taxes on a single gallon of gas are quadruple what the oil company profit is per gallon and THEY do all the work. If you really want to get upset, look at the percentage of profit that Coca-cola corp and United healthcare post EVERY QUARTER. They far out perform the percentage profits of any oil company, and probably better than the top two or 3 combined. This is again, the media attempt to make people upset. They throw a huge number out there without any context.
What about the people whos retirement checks are tied to that stock, they LOST money last quarter. While those of you with united healthcare insurance got SOAKED by your CEO and administrative benefits and they posted a near half billion in profit in 1Q this year. And it was done on the backs of people who voluntarily pay the premiums for health insurance, so quit bitching. The obama camp wants you to freak out at that number, so they can get elected. At the same time that this story is released, the democrats ended their congressional seating to take a vacation, at Mr Reid and Mrs pelosis request so they are not forced to vote on drilling legislation that may actually HELP americans. Think about what you read before you get all upset, put it in context and really, the Exxon folks arent doing as well as you may think.

Exxon-Mobil only makes 10% profit after taxes > that article on their quarterly represents their 'gross profit' before expenses are subtracted. On the contrary,,,,,the federal government makes 18% on a gallon of fuel,,and they don't do anything to earn it! Microsoft makes 33% profit, yet nobody is saying anything about them... Johnson and Johnson makes 13% profit after taxes,,,no whinning there either. Instead of blaming the oil companies,,,blame the oil rich countries who pump it,,,,and the federal gov. who takes too much without using the collected taxes wisely....

Well said Paul!!! :tu::tu::tu:

And the democratic controlled house and senate in illinois (Remember this is where Obama learned all his tricks) voted to also take their summer vacation while the budget is not settled and the issue of their 12% automatic pay raises will not have to be voted on until after the election. ( They have to vote on them to reject the raises otherwise the automatically get them. Now keep in mind the house and senate make in the neighborhood of $60,000/year for a part time job. They also have the best health and retirement plans of any state employee.

Oh, and one more comment the speaker of the Illinois Senate stated that he needed the raise or else he needed food stamps!!! 60,000 + a year for a part time job and you need food stamps.

Blame the politicians who have stopped or prevented drilling in large areas of the US. Blame the environmentalists that attempt to stop any construction of refineries or power plants.

Growth in other countries is driving worldwide demand. China and India are two of the big ones.

I would reword that.

Blame the politicians who want to keep drilling (thus using oil), blame the environmentalists who dont want to build nuclear plants even though they have an excellent track record, are efficient, clean, and would only need to build 400 plants to supply 100% of the electricity that the US needs.

Just going off memory here (thats not a good thing) but it seems like I read or heard somewhere that the permit process for a nuclear plant would take 20 to 30 years. We need to do something in the meantime.

We don't even build our own wind turbines, all the commercial ones are imported from overseas, and the price on those are rising quickly.:mad::mad:

Brian,,,I agree, time to start drilling for our 'own' oil and not selling it off to others. While we are at it,,,,,annex Mexico and send the military there to steal their oil,,,,,,,,,we've actually already paid for it considering all the money the illegals send back to Mexico each year. We probably have a 50 yr. supply of our own,,,,,,,,,,in 20 to 30 yrs. the country will be running on other sources of energy anyway! jmo

They've been saying that for half a century already. Remember the Belvedere in Tulsa? They buried gas with it because they thought cars wouldnt be using it anymore by 2007.

Did anyone hear that this morning Cigna health insurance has a 37% INCREASE in quarterly profits>? where is the outrage, where is the congressional investigation? Where are the subpoenas asking for meeting minutes with the HHS cabinet members conspiring to make healthcare officers wealthy while our poor illegal immigrants only get free public healthcare?

Did everyone hear Obamas latest gas plan from yesterday.

No need to drill for new oil, everyone just needs to air up their tires and tune up their cars to solve the price problem.:vomit::vomit:

AU CONTRAIRE MY FRIENDS....this is from TODAY. This guy is so fucking weak and flip flops more than a french beach full of john kerrys.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Friday he would be willing to support limited additional offshore oil drilling if that's what it takes to enact a comprehensive policy to foster fuel-efficient autos and develop alternate energy sources.
Shifting from his previous opposition to expanded offshore drilling, the Illinois senator told a Florida newspaper he could get behind a compromise with Republicans and oil companies to prevent gridlock over energy.
Republican rival John McCain, who earlier dropped his opposition to offshore drilling, has been criticizing Obama on the stump and in broadcast ads for clinging to his opposition as gasoline prices topped $4 a gallon. Polls indicate these attacks have helped McCain gain ground on Obama.
"My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," Obama said in an interview with The Palm Beach Post.
