....I was kinda surprised today watching the news reports of qualifying at Indy....NO ONE WAS THERE IN THE STANDS.....I went to qualifying days for nearly 15 years in a row, always hanging out in the 'Snake Pit' inside turn #1.....the 'Snake Pit' was kinda like Woodstock without the music....people drunk, lying in the mud drunk, passed out on their Harleys....naked chix everywhere, many vans rockin'.....guy fights, girl fights, girls fighting guys, girls fighting cops....loose tits everywhere....damn, those were the days...when the 'Snake Pit' was closed several years ago, I never went back...it just ain't the same....too antiseptic these days....

....there was always a big crowd, especially in the infield....I went there for many years on pole day and never saw a car qualify(too drunk I guess)....I did see one crash in front of the 'Snake Pit' one year, but that is the only racing memory of all the years I attended the qualifications....it was the 'Greatest Spectacle' in racing for decades, now everyone I know is giving up their tickets the last few years....probably better off financially to rid the track of the rowdies, but the character is gone.....
...kinda like Nascar, the 'Good Ole Boys' have all driven off to retirement and the new generation just doesn't get me excited....I liked watching King Richard, Bobby, Cale, Benny, Freddy, Curtis Turner.....the guys had character....I was a big fan of Tim Richmond, he burned out quickly too...guess I'm just gettin' old !!!

I was thinking the same thing, when they went back 12 years or so to show someone qualify(Little Al) and the front stretch was packed. I did turn one one year, don't remeber going to the race that year.

If it wasn't for the other two races the track would be a Coca Cola plant.

when I went to the F1 race last year there wasn't any trash on the ground...

Some things will never be the same.

I could be wrong,,,but didn't Tim Richmond die of AIDS/HIV? If so,,,yeah, he burned out too quickly.

Just as Tim’s future seemed so bright, the 1987 season brought disaster. He was diagnosed with HIV during the winter of 1986, but the racing world was told that he had double pneumonia. Tim was so sick that he missed most of the early part of the season. During a spring test session, he was too weak to run the outlined distance. His first full length race of 1987 came at Pocono in June. In triumphant style, Tim held off a hard charging Bill Elliot for the win and admitted to reporters that he never even saw the checkered flag with all the tears in his eyes. In victory lane, Tim was so emotional that he was reduced to speechlessness for one of the very few times in his life. Little did anyone know at the time that Tim was a dying man. The very next week Tim Richmond fought off Ricky Rudd for his last Winston Cup win, at Riverside. Tim dedicated the Father’s Day victory to his Dad. However, the effects of the illness began to take its toll on him. By August, NASCAR said that he "was in no shape to drive a car." Richmond resigned from Hendrick Motorsports in the fall of 1987.

yep, knew that stuff too....I was a very avid Nascar fan then and Tim was one of my favorites......his girlfriend was Mary Frann, the star of Newhart died in her sleep shortly after Tim....supposedly from a heart attack....rumored she had aids too.....
