View Full Version : GT500 and GT500KR values (pure speculation)

Have you also noticed how may cars being sold have ridiculously low miles on them? I have always felt there were a large number of Prowlers purchased by speculators hoping to see a short term increase in price. And as pointed out above with the economy they are starting to unload them.
We all saw the 1997 Kat with less than 500mi that (may have) sold for $29K. That's amazing considering the original sticker price and dealer mark up when the vehicles first were introduced. I wonder if the new Shelby mustangs will suffer the same fate. Granted, Mr. Shelby only has so much life left in him, but will the GTs, GT500, and GT500KR increase in value when he eventually passes?
I signed up for a chance to buy one of 2 KRs and/or one of 5 GT500s. They are being offered through military car sales to military members stationed overseas, and should be offered at MSRP (if not a little less). I think I would jump on the KR (only 1571 offered in the US). Not so sure I'd by the GT500 (production numbers expected to be over 10K).
Not that I'm expecting to win the chance to buy (as there will probably be 10's of thousands of entries)...but I'm just curious what you guys think. $80K for the KR or about $50K for the GT500? How do you think they'll hold their value (although I'd probably never sell if I did buy one)?
Good question Louis,
well PERSONALLY I think the KR will probably hold its value better than the GT500,
after all there are already quite a few of them out and still coming.
Like BrAin (KatHunter) said the other day, once ole Shelby bids farewell you might
see a 'surge' in prices ............ :?:

I did Okay with my 2007 GT-500 ..kept it for one year and sold for more than what i paid for it....I did get mine less than MSRP... but now that Ford is going to keep making the GT-500 every year they could be had for less than Msrp.....KRs are selling for 120k and more....if you can get a KR for Msrp JUMP on it ....... it will hold it's Money since they are not making as many as the GT-500....
Carrol Shelby's factory in Vegas is going to go on with or with out him and in short term i don't think it matters if he is gone ...he has a deal with Ford for the use of his name and that won't stop if he dies(till the deal runs out).....

That's what I was thinking. I checked some e-bay sales and it seemed like around $100-120 was the going rate.
I was in Kuwait in '99, and was going to buy a Prowler then. I was going to get it for between $33-36K (I can't remember). My idea was I could always sell it and at least break even if I didn't like it, especially since dealers were still marking them up. The ex talked me out of it. Fast forward 10yrs and a "new" '97 sells for $29K. What's up with that?
The funny thing is...the "critics" were underwhelmed with the KR. They say its better than the GT500 when driven back to back, but still were expecting more for the price. If I am lucky enough for them to draw my name, I gotta find $80K. :-)

jmo, 29 for a new 97 now compared to 33 to 36 in 99 is not bad. A lot of the old muscle car prices dropped extremely low for 15 to 20 years before they became collectable. It will take awhile before you see the prowlers increase in value, assuming that they eventually do.
A lot of this goes back to the dealer gouging. Wanted one when they came out, 40 g + over sticker caused me to walk away. Alot of people still believe the prowlers are $80,0000. I did not pay any attention to the prowlers from after they came out in 97 till 2003 while searching for something else and came across prowler pricing. A couple of dealers still had new 01's for 10g under sticker. Thats when I decided to buy.

No clue about Mustangs...but I think the Ford GT recently went up in value past MSRP...those are holding their value real well...should have gotten one when their prices crashed back then.

Well, it turns out I did not win a chance to buy a KR or GT500. There were over 200 entries in each lottery. I guess I'll have to just be a casual observer as these to cars age. Later on in life I can always say...imagine if I had won... :0)

So, I come into work on Monday and I have an e-mail from the Exchange New Car Sales rep telling me that I won the opportunity to buy a 2009 GT500. It turns out that some of the people who won the chance to buy during the initial drawing turned it down. So after 3 rounds of drawings, guess who's name gets pulled.
Now I really wanted the KR, and one of those may still be available. I'm hoping that no one can afford and they'll keep turning it down until they get to my name (wish me luck). So for now I am about to purchase a 2009 GT500 in Performance White with Vista Blue stripes.
It seems as if this was meant to be as I will be in Virginia for a training class starting on Monday, and the car is ready for delivery and financing is locked. I wanted to drive my Prowler from CA to VA, but the travel specialists were giving me a hard time. I was trying to enjoy the drive and save the Government money at the same time, but I couldn't get them to see it my way.
Now I'll go to VA, pick up my new GT500 and drive it back to CA...just to go in storage with my other cars. :-( The good news is I leave Korea in Jul 09, so it will be less than a year in semi-idle phase . My other car that is a stick is just sitting cuz my friend cant drive a manual. Fortunately my mother can drive a stick. :-) I'm hoping she can take it for a cruise once or twice a month.
Now I just need to come up wit $32K to turn the GT500 into a Super Snake with 725HP!!! Anybody got any extra cash laying around that they want to give me. Consider it like a donation to a charity...The Miles of Smiles Foundation. :-)

I'm not sure what you mean by CV, but the price sounds good.
Update: On Friday I was ready to go to the bank and get the $$ to pay for the GT500, but I exhausted myself playing softball and decided to wait until Monday. When I get to my room and check my computer, I see an e-mail from the rep back in Korea that the KR is up for raffle again. The drawing is on Monday. Wish me luck. :-)

Well, I didn't get a choice of colors since it was part of the Overseas Military Sales lottery. But my GT500 is going to be Performance White with Vista Blue stripes. The perfomance white was my #3 choice (blue, black, white). My long term plans (aka dream) include Shelby's Super Snake package (725HP)!!!

She's still in transit from the factory in MI. She's going by rail to Tennessee, then by truck to Norfolk, VA. As soon as she arrives, I'll put up the pics here and on TeamShelby.com and FordGT500.com. ;-)
Needless to say, I hope she arrives ASAP. I need a car bad. I'm in here in Norfolk w/o a car. Missing great cruising weather. I wish I had my Prowler here, but there was no time to drive from CA. :cry2:

I just realized that I never posted pictures of the GT500. These pics are from Feb 09 (the last time I was home).
The Kat and Spyder are stored at a friend's house. The Shelby is at my mother's.
I leave Korea in about 8 months. Going to ???? We'll see where the USAF decides to send me next, but hopefully it will be somewhere I can drive these. Otherwise, I'll have to stick with the 1991 Miata with 235K miles. :-)

I'm actually back home for a few day leave as I head to my next station in Madrid, Spain. I have been enjoying all the cars, and the newest addition, 1994 25th Anniversary Pontiac Trans Am Convertible. :-)

The Shelby is a great car. I love the power. I wish I had enough legal highway to open her up. I'm trying to ship her to Spain. If that works out, then I will get the chance!
She accelerates wonderfully and is smooth on the road. I still have to get used to the clutch, but that's just a matter of more seat time. :-D

stprinz...I'd love to get to the US car show. I know I will be travelling for work around that time. If I'm back, I'll try and get out there.
magnummrk...All of the critics say the 2011 is a great car. Especially when compared to the first gen 2007-2009s.
GT...What do you think?
Maybe I could find a buyer in Spain for my 2009 and upgrade? Hmm...
