Hot-rod show returning to city
A hot-rod and muscle-car show expected to draw participants and vehicles from across the country will go on as scheduled at the end of May at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, a show executive said Wednesday.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts Hot Rod Super Nationals are scheduled for a fourth year in Springfield from May 30 to June 1. However, organizers considered other locations as a result of electrical problems at the fairgrounds.
“Our decision is to continue with the show on its original dates in May and June. We feel that they’ll have everything ready to go, and we’re very comfortable with that location,” said Matthew Louck, vice president of marketing for Family Events Inc., the Indianapolis-based promoter.
About 14,000 participants and 1,200 vehicles are expected for this year’s event.
State officials announced Wednesday that B&B Electrical of Springfield submitted the low bid of $1.8 million to replace 22 miles of underground electrical cable at the fairgrounds, with the goal to reopen by mid-May.
Louck said show organizers considered other locations as a backup but always preferred to remain at the fairgrounds.
“We did have contingency plans ready to go, but in assessing the situation and talking to everybody there, we were assured it would be done in time,” Louck said.
The show, normally held in August, was moved to the end of May this year to avoid the summer heat and even out the car-show season.
