DEKALB, Ill. (Feb. 14) - DeKalb Police say a gunman who opened fired at Northern Illinois University is dead. Authorities say the gunman started shooting in a lecture hall on Thursday, injuring as many as 15 people as students frantically scrambled over desks for cover.
Kishwaukee Community Hospital said on its Web site up to 15 victims were arriving, including three to four with head wounds.
The shooting took place around 3 p.m. in Cole Hall near the King Commons, a central gathering place on the 25,000-student campus, according to the Web site.
All classes were canceled Thursday night and the campus was closed on Friday. Students were urged to call their parents "as soon as possible" and were offered counseling at any residence hall, according to the school Web site.
The Associated Press left messages for university police and police in DeKalb, located about 65 miles west of Chicago.

Rick - Thanks God your son is safe!!!
Seems to me we need better gun controls. I don't have the answers on how to get a grip on this growing problem, but we'd be silly to do nothing! Clearly
whatever laws we have now and whatever controls we have now are not working. JMO

Rick, glad you son is ok. Hope all of his friends are also.
Now time for my rant.
Do you ever notice how these events always seem to take place it what are considered gun free zones. You don't see these wackos walk into a police station or onto a military base to carry out their cowardly acts. They walk into places where they are seldom challenged. One armed civilian can make a huge difference in these events. ie: the church shootings out west several months ago.
More gun control laws won't discourage armed criminals, they are already breaking numerious laws. More armed citizens with concealed carry permits might. It's time to start taking some responsibility for your own safety. By the time the police arrive it is to late. ie: Chicago about two weeks ago, 5 dead in a clothing store robbery. Perp tied all the victims up and shot them in the head. For those that don't know Chicago already has a handgun ban. How would more laws have stopped this in Chicago?
One other thing, if I remember my numbers right. 48 of 50 states allow concealed carry. 2 states do not. Guess what one of the two states are, come on you all know the answer, say it together! Illinois!!
jmo, time to step off the box.

I only hope that the victims get the Press.. If they conceal the identity of the idiot that did this then maybe the next idiot thinking this would realise that they are not going to get "TV FAME" over doing such an unspeakable act.
The Press always glamourises tragedy and the victims get the wrong end of the deal... conceal the ID of these idiots and the Trench Coat thing and maybe they will think twice...I dunno I am so angry that this shit even happens :smflame::smflame::evil:

I've always wondered if making possession of any hand gun an automatic 25 year sentence without parole make any difference...
I guess for those that go into these crimes planning on suicide.... probably not.
As far as society in general, this would no doubt result in number of stabbings going up proportionally...
Its not the weapon, its the people...
Agreed. And the 25 year sentence wouldnt work. It sounds like it would be designed as a deterrent, and it just won't cut it.
1) Those who plan on suicide after the killings dont care about jail sentence.
2) Professional criminals dont think they're gonna get caught, so it doent make a difference
3) Crimes of passion happen when all judgement is lost. Not even the end of the universe would matter to those people (heck, they may embrace it).
In the end, gun control will keep law-abiding citizens defenseless against the criminals. It wouldve been a different story if some guys (and girls) were packing heat and actually knew how to use a gun. Owning it doesnt mean squat if you dont know how to use it.
I think it'd be interesting if gun use was a course similar to getting CPR certification. Then again, people carrying guns portrays a bit of a negative image of society. One in which people feel the need to carry a gun "just in case." What does that tell you about security?

I have a semi-automatic shotgun to defend my family and it works good on pheasants and rabbits as well...
other than law enforcement, I see no purpose in handguns...JMO

Sorry, have to disagree here.
What is the purpose of handguns that you believe law needs them and no one else does/should?
Close range / close quarters is where handguns come into play, imo there is a good chance that you will not get your shotgun on target in this instance. Keep the shotgun around for keeping thugs out of the house, you might find you need the handgun if one manages to make it into the house before you can stop them outside.

Just being a police officer does not mean you know how to use you handgun.
We had a case here several years ago where officers put over 30 rounds into a parked car because they thought the suspect was armed. They only hit him twice, and neither wound was like threatening. So yes, you definitely need to know how to use it.
In the end, gun control will keep law-abiding citizens defenseless against the criminals.
Lets not forget history here, most of the worlds worst dictators started their reign by banning private ownership of weapons. Hitler and Idi Amin (sp) come to mind offhand, there are many more. Some of the worst attrocities have been committed by governments against their own unarmed people.

I guess it depends on the environment in which you live... If I lived in an area where being the target of violent crime was a great possibility, then I would own a handgun.... but for my place in this world, the shotgun is fine...
personally, I have looked down the barrel of both weapons.... the shotgun intimidated me more ...JMO
