View Full Version : New Corvette, to buy or not to buy?

I have liked the new body Corvette since the 2005 model. For 06 they are offering a "paddle" shift for the automatic. Anyone have any input on the car? Options to order or not to order?

The ragtop has caught my eye, especially since the top is now available as a automatic. They offer a newer Red which really looks like a candy with saddle hides and matching top. A real knockout in my book.

I was going to wait for the Shelby Mustang but that is still a while away and certainly will not be selling for sticker anytime soon.

JIM,

The Vette is the best bang for the bucks... I love the new ones a well but can't tell you anyting about the options... i think they are dealing big time so you should be able to get a killer deal...

When I looked last year a deal was sticker or a little over. I passed because I didn't want a first year model. For 2006 models they are about sticker or 2-5% off.

I really like the new Vettes, that said..SkanKat and I have our eyes on a new Cayman...when we actually need a MDX.

Having drove the new Vette @ the GM event...I say go for it! I've seen them going for below MSRP in LA.

I have owned and driven many 911's in years past including a turbo. The Cayman is really good looking and should be one hell of a driver. My problem is that the new 911's are very pricey and like the Shelby Mustang and Cayman I think one is going to pay dearly for a while. When the C6 vett first came out they were sticker plus, but now, as a second year car, you can now wheel and deal to some degree.

Of interest the new Z car with 505hp is selling at many dealers at sticker, or around $65,000. Now that's a deal. A loaded vett with the 400hp engine goes for around $60,000. My problem is it is not available as a ragtop. I don't want the coupe.

heres a question....

Wouldn't you sooner have a Viper ?

I like the new Vettes... cool cars, but if i were going to go for broke.... i'd go with a snake... to me they are heaven...

theres a 2004 with no miles on it for 65k....

what do you think ?

Lone Ranger
09-05-2005, 02:34 PM
Jim, thats a thought but I've driven the vett and the Viper and momma wasn't real happy with the ride of the viper. Also my DC dealer here at the lake can't even work on my kat. I can imagine what would happen if I pulled up in a Viper.

Wish I lived closer to a decent dealer.

was the Viper rough, to stiff suspension....??

or where you snapping her neck with that 500 hp... lol

Actually both. Her complaint was the ride was too hard. I tried to explain that "firm" is not hard. No sale.

The Viper also spooks her as she knows all the headaches I've had with my kat trying to get things fixed or worked on.

i know what you mean.... DC has the worst reputation for fixing anything ... even way up here....have you had lots of problems with you Prowler ?...
I hope i never get that headache... no warranty and few $ to fix anything....
just a sec... gotta pray...............ok , i;m back ... lol

yeah, its always a matter of finding the right auto shops to really feel good about owning a car. Am glad at least in LaLaLand there's tonnes of specialized shops for each car. Almost bought a RX7 cuz there's like 3 rotary shops around..ended up with a more practical Acura and also found a great after market Acura shop.
Tonnes of Miata shops in LA (I actually use the Mazda dealership nearby for regular maintenance..they're one of the best/cheapest)...the 2 DC dealerships next to me are horrible. Have to drive an hour to Ontario to get to a prowler mechanic, and they're EXPENSIVE!

I agree with Hali..Viper rocks too..it was either the Viper or Prowler..the Kat won with the nicer ride with the missus.

We were out for lunch just now and dropped in on the local GM place..no 2006s in yet for them, but the 2005s are going below MSRP. they have 2 ragtops..but AUTOS..even the coupes they had were Autos..not sure why..

The 06's will be at the dealers in about two more weeks. I want the 6-speed with the new paddle shift but "she" wants the auto. Thats the problem at this time. I would not take delivery until January anyway as I don't want to pay the personal property tax this year. In Missouri if you buy a car , even on the last day of the year, you pay taxes for the entire year. Want to avoid that.

If I take delivery on the 2nd of January I would not be paying property tax until the following year.

holy crap !!!!

i've been lucky...
i have the worst peeling wheels anyone has ever seen, the hood shocks are frigged, my low tire light goes wanky but if i warm up the car for 5 min , i never have a problem..

thats it...

If i ever get rid of this Kat... it will be for a Viper...
but its not likley i will ever be able to afford the insurance... a 8cyl , 2 seat car is mega bucks here.. the Prowler was only $12/month more than the PT cruiser....

I may have reached my top end with the Kat....

can't stop dreaming about the Viper though...

dreamcast , your lucky you can hunt for a good mechanic....out in the back county , we aren't so lucky....seems that DC's service sucks from coast to coast , north to south...lol

that blue miata is sweet !

Here's the GM event that i've attended twice this year, just to kick the crap out of the Vettes: (and to find out how bad the Goat looked inside and out)

www.autoshowinmotion.com

I was able to spin the vette in the rain..the race instructor was very cool about it.

You can sign up for the nearest location..they keep updating the site with new locations and dates..sorry Hali..seems like its non-Canadian (talk abt that..we'll be in Toronto this week!)

Honestly, I've seen my friends having more problems with their Beemers (3 series) and E-Classes more than we've had with the Prowler. But LR is right..parts will be getting scarcer for the Kat. Dread the day it becomes a Porsche/Ferrari type maintenance cost level.

hell man !

i'm only 15 hours drive east of Toronto !!...lol

i'm going to be headed to Victoria British Columbia on Thursday, getting back to Halifax... next Tuesday....

its been 20 years since i've been to the mountains.. i'm really looking forward to it...

10 years down the road .. i'll be looking for a parts car to rob...

Now these shows are closer to me. St. Louis is only about 175 miles away. I may try to make that one. Thanks for the heads up.

Will need to order but still have my sites on the ragtop. Having a hard time making a decision.

Prowler is going to go. At least for now. As soon as I sell it I'll probably be sorry. I have a "Shriner" plate on the kat that reads PL8 (plate). If I get the 2006 I would keep my PL8 or go with something original like 06 C6. LOL

Been toying with the idea of a Gold this time. Still liked the Silver I sold to Fat Pat. Especially after tu-toning it. If I go Gold I have an idea of a different color to tu-tone it. I would tu-tone the Silver also.

Bill I'll know better by the end of the week on what I intend to do. Silver is good looking as you know and I have the matching silver trailer.

But, I will tell my paint guy to get the paint booth cleaned out and ready to go. I need another project. My wife is going to kill me for sure. And here she thought that I was back under control again. I guess I'll never grow up. I've been hiding my meds lately. I feel different these days. Wonder what is in those little pills that she keeps slipping in my food? Apparently it isn't Viagra. LOL

You can either paddle shift(auto) or auto they are both the same you choose which function to use.

Gary, you're right. I screwed up. The automatic IS with the paddle shift. Looks like that's the way I'm going.

Finalizing options and will order on Monday with delivery in about 4-6 weeks. I know it will be Monterey Red with a Cashmere interior and top. Having a problem deciding on the wheels. They have six to choose from or I may go with after market . Z-51 suspension, nav, XM Radio, 6- speed Paddle Shift, Power Top, etc.

I'll post the final order. Geez they go like hell.

About 6-7% off of sticker. We are still haggling on the percent. Most dealers are still holding sticker and in some cases, more.

On the Corvette forum last night a guy was saying that alot of dealers in La La Land were getting $5-10,000 over. That's insane.
