FOr the past few years Jim & Bonnie Olson hosted a fall cruise through the Smokies, ALWAYS BEEN a blast ! :tu:

Here's this years itinerary :

Prowl'n NC Mtns and train ride

When: Friday - Sunday Oct 19 - 21st

Where: Murphy to Bryson City, NC Last year we hosted a cruise thru the NC mountains and
some had showed interest in maybe doing a train ride this year. We have several
Prowlers that are getting together the 3rd weekend of October (19th - 21st). We
will be meeting at our home in Murphy, NC and doing a short cruise up to Bryson
City, NC and board the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. (WWW.GSMR.COM (http://WWW.GSMR.COM)) The train
ride crosses Lake Fontana and runs along the Nanthhala River with a short stop
over at Nanthhala Outdoor Center (http://www.noc.com/). We made a stop there last
year with the Prowler group and watch the whitewater kayakers. The train ride
cost around $47 per person and takes about 4 and half hours. We are planning on
leaving Saturday morning (Oct 20th - 10am) for a short cruise up to Bryson City,
and having lunch before boarding the train. The train departs at 2pm, but they
want us there
around 1pm. After the train ride we plan on returning to Murphy and having
Dinner. For those that have time and would like to cruise Sunday, we could head
over to Helen, GA for Octoberfest, or any other scenic drives. We still have a
few bedrooms available between the 3 Prowler owners that have homes in the area.
Otherwise there is a Holiday Inn Express, or Best Western, or a few Bed & Breakfast
in downtown Murphy.
http://www.discoverourtown.com/NC/Murphy/Lodging-3436.html If your interest,
contact us as soon as possible. Call or email for more info. If we can get 20 people
together, we could maybe get a group discount on the train fair. Jim & Bonnie

We're making our plans to attend again this year but will all depend on our visit from our daughter before she deploys for another 7 month tour in Iraq/Afghan.

This is another great event being planned by former "FL Kat Pack" (before they moved to NC) members Jim & Bonnie Olson & being assisted by members Nancy & Dave Ridge. :tu:

Thanks for posting Pepe!! hope you & Miss Kitty attend again.

Carolinas and Smokies are just awesome. My family went there last year and they had a real steam locomotive that after I questioned the engineers about it after our ride- they invited me to ride along and get the coal into the furnace and even pull the chord for the whistle. I was like a little kid - very cool.

UPDATE from Jim Olson reg. the Smokies :

I just got off the phone with the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad, and they advised if we want to board as a group, we better make reservations now. The third weekend of October is one of their busiest weekends because of the leaf change. To make reservations call:

1-800-872-4681 push X3 (for groups)
make your reservation for:
Saturday - Oct 20th, 2pm train out of Bryson City to Nantahala.
Make sure you reference # 337717 under James Olson, that way we board as a group. The only cars left was open cars, which is better for the view.
Cost is $47 per person, and $25 for kids under 12.
The train is filling up, so make your reservation Now....
Make sure you reference the date, time and place, and reference # 337717 above.
Any questions, give me a call or email:
email me back to let me know you have made your resevation.

If anyone is considering attending, suggest you also go ahead & book your hotel in addition to the train reservations. Hotels fill up quickly this time of the year because of the "leaf change" in October. Suggestions were listed on Pepe's first post on this thread but please PM or email me if you need more hotels.
