Israel to ask U.S. for $2.2 billion for pullout
Funds would be used to relocate 9,000 Jewish settlers forced from Gaza

JERUSALEM - Israel will ask the United States for $2.2 billion in special aid to fund its planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, an Israeli newspaper said on Monday.
Haaretz daily said the funds would be used to pay for the pullout, slated to begin next month, and to relocate some 9,000 evacuated Jewish settlers to underpopulated areas of Israel.
Top officials from Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s office and the Finance Ministry will make the request this week to officials in Washington, which backs the plan for removing Jewish settlements from Gaza and some of the West Bank.
Israel hopes to resettle residents in the less developed southern Negev and northern Galilee regions, but to do so it needs more funds for infrastructure.
Washington hopes the Gaza withdrawal plan will to spur talks on a peace “road map” for a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Israel is among the largest recipients of U.S. aid and is due to receive $2.3 billion in military aid next year
