Would like opinions on a several possible options for accomodations for the 2013 Texas event. I am considering moving the hotel location to the I-35 area beteen Austin and San Antonio to save most people an hour or more on their travels to and from the event. In doing so our average daily crusies (all but one day) will be shorter also.
There are several options that I'd like some input on.
1)find the typical travel type (chain) hotel with limited breakfast for under $99 a night. Most -if not all- of these are right along I-35 and would have parking lots adjacent to Interstate. Banquet would be off property somewhere
2) Resort type property - more upscale, restaurants, bars, spa, more luxury amenities but pay for breakfast and more expensive - don't know for sure but in $119 -$149 a night range Maybe like this one (there are others)

3)Texas Hill country lodge/cabins/B&B There are numerous properties that have much more charm and character but none are large enough to host everyone - there are about a dozen properties all within a mile or so of Wimberly 6-25 rooms each and you could stay at any one of your choice. Some are valley view, hill view, some on lake or river, all have character but downside is no single parking lot for everyone. These would range from $79 - $159 a night - you book one that suits you.

Marty,
I'm sure you will find a great hotel. With the temps in Texas, I'd say make sure it has a nice pool.

A chain is fine as long as it's not a shit hole, I really think the under $100 is key to a good turn out.

First and fallback/default plan is chain hotel - Hampton Inn /Embassy Square type. I just thought I'd see how much interest there is ina more resort type place as I have heard comments over the years that some people would like "their" vacation to be more special. The lodges/cabins/inns have soooo much charactor and you would konow you were in "Hill Country" but the lack of a central location for everyone is a concern.
Nancy - whether the decision is made to keep the evnt headquartered in Boerne as I previously posted or move to New Branfels/San Marcos/Wimberly areas they are all 30-45 minutes from downtown San Antonio - depending on where your brother lives you can still saty there.
Daughter lives in Boerne... solves that ;)

The nice thing about the hotel in Deadwood when compared to the hotel in The U.P. was in Deadwood you had everything you needed on site.
Also having the banquet on site is helpful...remeber...drunk people buy more stuff!

No problem. ;-)
BTW I think I posted this early on when the TX Event was being discussed but I attended my niece's rehearsal dinner at this restaurant in New Braunfels and I think it would be worth checking out as a possible cruise & dinner locale for one of the nights.
They have two or three group rooms but not sure the total number they can accommodate.
Nice wide winding roads around there for a Prowlin' cruise.

Nancy - have it on the list for "on your own dinner" locations close by (assuming we move the location to I 35 area and Rebecca & I are going to check it out along with several others for the opening night. :tu:

Wasn't it in Tulsa,,,,where we got into a Embassy Suites hotel for $99 a nite? That was the best place we've had during big Prowler events. Free,,, 'full' breakfast meals, drinks during happy hour, and provided security during the night. Rooms were awesome, and the hotel staff bent over backwards for us! :tu:
Many other hotels were good,,,,,,,,,,,,Embassy Suites was two stars above the rest. And how about a hotel that allows smoking? Pisses me off to go outside to burn one or a cigar.
Just my opinion....

I personally would prefer an affordable "Resort Style" hotel that offers service besides just a place to sleep/shower.
Pool/Restaurant/Bar on site, as well as room service would be nice.
I'm not familiar with the activities or cruise routes that are planned, but this seems like a decent nice affordable option in NW San Antonio.
I'm sure a group rate would get us below the $100 mark.
This hotel is also pet friendly.

For what it's worth, that particular Resort Hotel is REALLY nice! I remember it even has a Golf Course out back. Nice Bar, just off the beaten path enough to seem remote and about 2 miles inside loop 1604, the San Antonio Outer Loop..

Hey guys, I'm sure Marty will get caught up on all the posts etc when he gets back home tomorrow (well, actually later today since it's now 2 a.m. Friday). He's been gone from home for 22 days now and has worked unbelievable hours. I'm betting he hasn't been on PT the entire time he's been gone. Anyway, just thought I would let you know!
Regarding the location of this hotel, I'm sure it's VERY nice and is certainly convenient to our home - but might not be a good central location for all the activities he's thinking about. Plus it might be a traffic nightmare. Most of the venues are going to be on the opposite side of SA. I believe he's considering trying to shorten the drive for folks coming in and is looking for a location slightly north of SA up I-35 towards Austin. Going across SA to this location anywhere close to rush hour is no fun! (trust me...I do it every day):cry2:

Rebecca told me I shoulc check this thread now that I am back home from an extended (brutal) business trip. I have already been to the Hilton property Ron listed and if I can find a simialr type property 50 to 100 north along the I -35 corridor I would book it today. I still have it on my list and the location of the Hilton isn't all bad - just means an hour longer drive getting here and back as compared with my target area between San Antonio and Austin. It would add time to most of our planned cruises/activities also but may still be a better choice than a lesser hotel in a better location.

I asked my brother in San Antonio about the Hilton and he said it is very nice and was a former Hyatt but fairly pricey.
A large group would most likely get a much better rate though.

Nancy - it is located directly adjacent to the Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Golf Club but did not replace it. I had though about another Hyatt Resort property closer to Austin but as your brother said the Hyatt resorts are pricey.

As I said, it's still on the list but it;s not just the hour more getting there and back - I need to consider ease of getting a large group of cars to the various planned crusies. Don't worry - I know there are a Super 8 and Motel 6 in the ideal location:biggrin:
