Why haven't more people done the Hi-Boy conversion?

Please way-in with your thoughts of why and your opinion about how the the Hi-boy kit looks.

Gary is still offering a hi-boy kit on his web site, how is the fit? If you have/had a hi-boy what would you change about the kit? If you have/had one, where did you get it?

My 0.02: I think its a nice mod. However, I think the Prowler itself with the fenders and bulging trunk is an excellent design (sans bumpers). That said, we keep the kats in the family all stock

I considered it for the Black kat. 2 Problems:

1. Too expensive

2. Looks great from the back, but in the pictures looks wierd from the side. Never seen it in person, so it might look better.....

I too am not a fan of the look from the side. The wheel arch is off looking because they try to hide the frame.

Also the gas fill is in the trunk unless you can fab a gas filler into the panel yourself.

I could never own one. I have fenders and the splash guards and I still cringe every time I hear sand or a pebble sneak by them and bounce off the body.

Like everything aftermarket for the Prowler, stuff is pricey.

I echo Pauls opinion regarding this....

the paint chips are hard to take even running full fenders and splash guards...I guess it would keep the tailgaters back a few feet.

I don't see the look as being an improvement...

but thats only my opinion..

While I think some cars lend themselves well to the Hi-Boy look, I do not believe that it is a good style for the kat. I prefer mine just the way it is.

The Hi-Boy look is just not for me. I don't even know what this conversion costs since I've never considered it for my car.

I like to "Look" at it. Wouldn't want to own it unless I had a few prowlers and wanted to just play with one

The key here is >>> removing the front fenders! Most don't have the balls to do so,,,,,thus, the kit wouldn't look right with the front fenders in place. Its a mental block thing,,,the front fenders. You'd be surprised that you probably 'aren't' going to inherit any rock chips due to front fenders being removed. That is my experience over the past year after removing them,,,,and I don't have a garage queen cat. No balls = No HiBoy kit! JMO

AC....

You have Balls confused with Brains....;-)

For those that do have the fenders, just look on the inside of them... see any dirt ? I bet you do... all that would have been on your rear fender rock guards and paint... the chips on the sides happen when the wheels are turned....
AC's hood has no rain, no dirt, and no turns... he is safe...lol

There is a lot of truth to what you say, Jim. Here in western PA the side of the car would be a mess. Even if I liked the no fender look, I don't think the car would fair well here.

Dave,
They probably sand some of the roads in your area like they do here.... I have about 5 miles of it i cannot avoid to get to the highway... I pray for high winds and heavy rain for the end of march so I can take the car out by April first..... the tick, tick, tick hurts.... the smallest chip on the clearcoat on top of the black paint is very visible.....my poor rocker panels under the door look like hell and it is likely that i will have to get that part painted every spring....

mopardave

No sand here, Jim. The anti-skid is a combination they call a "cocktail" consisting of gravel, salt, and liquid calcium chloride. I made the mistake of getting the kat out too early three years ago and I ended up with oxidation on the A-arms. I had to tear the front end down and have it repainted. Because of the problem, I went with paint and clear coat instead of powder-coat.

holy hell.... calcium chroride ?
they used to use that stuff in the open pit mine where I used to work in BC... thats nasty stuff....

They salt the hell out of everything here.....the cars kick it up on the highway into clouds... i'm sure that is hard on the engine, what ever doesn't get caught by the air filter...

mopardave

Since they started using this "cocktail" about 5 years ago, our roads stay white until there has been enough rain to wash it all off in the Spring.

1. You have Balls confused with Brains....;-)

2. For those that do have the fenders, just look on the inside of them... see any dirt ? I bet you do... all that would have been on your rear fender rock guards and paint...

4. AC's hood has no rain, no dirt, and no turns... he is safe...lol

1. Wrong,,,,badger balls breath,,,,,have both brains and balls! My fenders are removed for the best look possible.

2. Dirt and mud inside the fenders? Yup,,,,you lazy asses never clean that area,,,thats why it's dirty there. True,,,,have caught some rocks on the quarter panel rock guards,,,,that's why they are there! Only one rock chip above the guard [Jan. of 2001] I have was when I had fenders and mud flats ON,,,go figure.

3. Maybe,,,maybe not? I don't have them,,,,I drive my car year round,,,,,,make hundreds of turns,,,,but don't go off-roading like some of you guys, lol

4. Hood > No dirt, but,,,,,,,seen lots of rain, sleet, small hail, forest fire ash, etc.
Hood still looks fabulous >> no swirl marks either,,, Hundreds of thousands of turns = huge balls of steel

Fess up,,,,if the HiBoy kit was given to you,,,,,,,you'd still have those fenders on,,,,,,,,,, = balls the size of Tic Tacs, lol

I'm putting up Sno and the family down at the Phx. homeless shelter, $4 a person per night,,,,,besides, that family has ringworm and headlice. Don't want that crap near my mobile home shack, lol. I hope they don't mind sharing a bathroom with 24 other homeless souls? They might only have time for a PTA bath.

:rll: DC - check for crabs,,,good idea, I forgot about that issue, lol.

Jimbo - due to the overload of illegal aliens down at the homeless shelter,,,,I could only get him booked for one night there on the sleeping cots. If he wants to stay longer,,,,,,,I'll have to find some cardboard boxes for them to sleep under,,,down near the riverbottom with the snakes, coyotes, and scorpions.

Which states actually (legally) allow bumpers and/or fenders to be removed from cars? I will likely NEVER remove mine although I really do like the fenderless and bumperless look. I'd like to have a second Prowler just to customize, and I would really like body kit to add static front fenders (attached to the body) with a running board look similar to the 20's and 30's cars. I couldn't even get the DPS (highway patrol) to leave me alone about no front license plate.... although they never stopped me for same in my Corvette. I really hated having to display a front plate because it just doesn't look as clean.

It will be interesting to see if I get pinched for no rear bumbers this year.... originally I didn't want to remove the front bumpers because I worried about someone bumping me... I got over it and have now removed all the bumpers....I will just be carefull where i park and where i drive. The law here isn't much of a problem.... they let alot of stuff slide as long as you are not being a jerk on the road.... if you start acting up, then you will get a ticket for everything....

JOYRIDE

I've had the bumpers off mine for two years now. I think their more apt to give you a hard time about the plate if you have bumpers. I had a cop say to me " It would ruin the look of the front, would it not? " He let me go and I thought if the bumpers were on he might have sugested some kind of braket to hold it. Maybe it was my lucky day, not all police oficers are car lovers

In Nova Scotia we are only required to have a plate on the rear... unless you have a personalized plate, then you are supposed to have it on the front and the rear....

can't figure that one out.... I just run the back plate....8-)

Now what people will think about that ?? Top 3 list is:

#1) Oh the car has flames on it
#2) Is he a really big Fantastic-4 Fan
#3) FAG
