Manor's wet T-shirt contest draws female students

Grand prize of up to $5,000 to help pay tuition attracts students to amateur night at strip club

The University of Guelph may not be happy about a wet T-shirt contest targeted toward its students, but the owner of Guelph's only strip club says the female amateurs keep flocking to the Tuesday night event.
The reason? A grand prize of up to $5,000 to pay off a year of tuition.
So far, that's been enough to draw out a string of competitors. And the owner of the Manor says the number of participants rises every week.
But student critics argue the contest unfairly targets a population that's financially vulnerable. And what appears to be easy money could come at a cost.
It's been a few weeks since the Manor launched its student-friendly wet T-shirt contest.
At the competition a week ago, nine of the 11 participants were students from Guelph or nearby communities, said Sam Cohen, the club's owner.
Everyone who enters the weekly contest gets $100 for participating. The winner of the event takes home $500.
The grand finale -- with the tuition prize -- will happen in about three months, Cohen said. He plans to hold it before final exams.
"The response has been pretty positive," he said, explaining club attendance was between 250 and 300 people last Tuesday.
However, not everyone is impressed by those numbers.
Cohen knows he's irked some university faculty, but he chalks it up to a misunderstanding.
"Maybe they feel we're trying to entice students to come out to the bar," he said. "They've been coming out for years either way."
He says strip clubs are more mainstream these days, with more couples and women attending than ever before.
"It's not just coming in and looking at naked women. We provide a night club," he said. "An exotic nightclub."
Last year, the winner of the amateur wet T-shirt contest won a year's lease on a Plymouth Prowler. Before that, it was a lump sum of cash.
In the past four years, Cohen said he's given away thousands of dollars to amateurs.
"What I've changed this year is the prize," he explained.
But for U of G critics, that's precisely the problem.
Members of the Central Student Association have spoken out against how the Manor has been marketing the contest.
"Most students are pretty appalled the Manor would use these advertising tactics," said Becky Wallace, academic commissioner for the student association.
"The target population is the financially vulnerable.
"Wealthy students here aren't having to make that decision or compromise."
Cohen said the club's wet T-shirt contest remains popular without having to rely on handing out flyers or advertising on campus, which he said he has never done.
And as for why he's focused on showcasing amateurs, the reason is simple -- there's a demand for it.
"The whole amateur (scene) has really flourished," he said.
"People may be tired of seeing the traditional type of dancer. People want to see the girl next door."
