Yes, that's limp mode. I know some other folks here
know what to do.

Yep, I'd replace both. At least I did when mine died. You can get to them from the back of the car without having to jack or lift it.

The dealers have them, Napa also carries them. Should be around $20 each +-
I would think other auto parts stores would also carry them.
The electrical connection between the input and output sensors are different, so if you put one in the wrong position you will not be able to hook up the connection.
I carry both a 1 inch standard and deepwell socket, never having changed mine I am not sure if you need both sockets.

Bought them at NAPA several years ago
In limp mode, if engine light comes on but the speedo still works - failure of input tranny sensor ------ If engine light comes on and the speedo doesn't work - failure of the output tranny sensor

A 1' deep-well socket and ratchet are all you need. Or you can use a 1" Wrench in a pinch..
Both Sensors are located on the Driver Side of the Transmission, forward of the Trans Cooler. One is easily seen near the rear of the car, the other is a little harder to see, more to the front of the car. No fluid will drip out when you remove the old sensors, either.
If you lay on a Creeper they will be harder to see especially if you wear Glasses. Lay on a sheet or blanket and you'll be better off.
If the Speedo doesnt work then the problem is the Output Sensor. If the Speedo still works then the problem is the Input Sensor.
Transmission Sensor Input, Mopar #4800878. Transmission Sensor Output, Mopar #4800879. Failure Symptoms are the car will enter limp mode (2nd gear only) with a check engine light.
Here is a pic of the Tranny out of the car with the 2 Sensors recognizable. The Wire Connections are connected to the 2 Sensors.

so i went to autozone and bought both sensors. then went on poa and read about disconnecting battery as a first try.
i did go and have a new muffler installed today. on the way home is when it went into "limp" mode. anyway, after disconnecting the battery and then re-connecting...the light went off an all seems well.
should i change them anyway. since i have the rear belly pan, it seems that getting to them will require the belly pan to be removed. any thoughts.?
thanks to all for the help> u guys rock!

Make sure the wires on the sensors have a solid connection. If you had the muffler installed they could have caused the problem........

I had the same thought as Bill :tu:
Personally, if wires seem ok change them sensors anyways while you are NOT stranded somewhere in the middle of nowhere (again)
It certainly would give you a little piece of mind for your next trip :tu:

just took it around the block. speedo doesnt work, and light went back on. guess i will take the belly pan off and change them both.

If you can get it on a Lift you can do the job. That would be A LOT easier than taking your Rear Pan off.
Also the Muffler Guys may have accidentally disconnected the Sensor..

I'm thinking that they are forward of the rear pan. The foward (input) is in line with the rear axle. They other one is about six inches further back. By the way the electrical connections clip on.

I've seen guys change their's at the side of the rode but mine went out a few miles from home so I drove slow in 2nd gear to get it there. I was glad I did as the Kat has a TGF rear belly pan and there was no way that I could have gotten under the car without jacking it up and using jack stands to get to the sensors.

well goatboy never showed up so i had to do it all myself. i did have to take the belly pan off to get to the sensors but had no problem replacing them. just took it for a short drive before putting the belly pan back on....ALL GOOD>>>
i think i will go buy an extra set just to have on hand..

Hey Ed,
With the cost of your labor you should start a Class Action Lawsuit for these bad sensors!!:rll:
