1921 SAYERS AND SCOVILL
HAND CARVED PANEL HEARSE
FUNERAL CAR
Specifications:
Est. 70hp, inline six-cylinder Continental engine, three-speed transmission, air-ride suspension, and mechanical brakes. Wheelbase: 118"
Founded in 1876, Sayers & Scovill specialized in production of horse-drawn hearses before venturing into automotives in the early 20th century. Although mechanically unremarkable, the company’s vehicles were fitted with luxurious coachwork reflective of expert craftsmanship. Now over 130 years old, S&S remains the only funeral coachbuilder founded before the automotive era, and has provided services for the likes of Rosa Parks, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and former Presidents Reagan and Ford.
In present condition, the Hearse is completely original and an older restoration. The body is in remarkable condition and the detailed and ornate craftsmanship is truly a work of art. Two large doors provide access to the rear compartment, which is finished in dark wood and has survived remarkably well. Dual platforms with rollers and a storage shelf are present in the rear while a single, brown leather bench seat is situated in the driver’s compartment and is in good shape no rips or tears on the drivers side the seam has a few stitches seperating barely noticable. The side panels, inner doorframes, dash panel, and headliner area are all wooden and evidently original as is the steering wheel with nickel-plated spokes. The undercarriage is likewise in good condition and, no rust was ever present on this vehicle.
This 1921 Sayers & Scovill funeral car is one of a kind and a fascinating example of expert, albeit uncommon, coachbuilding. Although S&S has survived to this day, this older restored hand carved 8 column panel hearse is one of the earliest remaining motorized funeral cars and a particularly intriguing vehicle.
