I have noticed the alternator squealing lately... more and more lately... the car has 38,000 miles on it now..

is this a sign that its on the way out ?

it will stop after the can is run for a while, but of late I've not been able to drive it, so it seems to be getting worse...

any advice would be much appreciated

I would bet it is your Fan Belt..With the engine running, spray a little WD-40 on the inside of the belt and if the noise goes away, it's the belt..If the noise doesnt go away, it's the Alternator. Good luck.. - Buddy

I haven't actually been driving it... just idling it in the driveway from time to time while I was making room in the garage to park it.....

so ... I've thrown half the stuff out that I've been saving for 20 years... (Packrat syndrome) and finally got her inside. I Changed the oil, put on 2 coats of wax, and put her up on jack stands today....

still no snow... but i'm ready..
