This was posted on our mercedes club site. Hate to lose my keys, need a second mortgage.
The recent thread about Volvo keys prompts me to relay a recent experience
with MB keys. Our 2002 E320 is missing one of the electronic keys, so I
planned to order one on a recent visit to the dealership. Parts couldn't
order one and I was sent to Parts in the showroom. They sent me to the
Service desk, who called a Service Advisor. He said it was now necessary
(because of some security breach awhile back) to write up a service ticket,
send the car into the shop, read some codes, order the key, wait for
delivery, return the car to Service and "synchronize" the codes, then return
the car to me.
Having noticed the number of people involved in this effort, I inquired
about the price. He said $290!! I used to think the old $130 price for a
new electronic key was too much. This time I left the dealership muttering
"this is the last straw and I'm buying something other than MB next time."
