It's Devil's Highway time again!
Set aside the weekend of September 19 and 20 for the 8th Annual AZ Prowler Group Devil's Highway Road Trip. For those of you who have already experienced Devil's Highway, you know what a good time this trip is. If you haven't done Devil's Highway yet, this is one trip you don't want to miss.
Devil's Highway is the stretch of old US Route 666 between Springerville and Morenci in eastern Arizona. It's 112 miles of the curviest road anywhere - a real challenge for the sport driving enthusiast and an all-around great cruise through some really scenic country. If you attend just one event this year, this should be the one!
The Phoenix area group will meet in the Fiesta Mall east parking area at 8:00 AM on Saturday, September 19th and leave around 8:30. Fiesta Mall is just northwest of US 60 and Alma School Rd in Mesa. The first leg of the trip takes us east on US 60 through Superior, Miami and Globe. At Globe we’ll join up with the southern AZ group before heading north up the beautiful Salt River Canyon, taking in the scenery as we climb from low desert to high country pines and on to Show Low where we'll stop for lunch. After lunch we’ll visit the go-kart track for the traditional Grudge Match Kart Races. Somebody gets T-boned or shoved into the wall in every race – Big Fun! If you're not interested in go-karts, there’s also shopping and a casino nearby. In the late afternoon we'll regroup, gas up and take scenic 260 through McNary and Sunrise and wind up in Springerville. This year, I’m going to try to squeeze in a visit to Whitewater Canyon in New Mexico on Saturday, time permitting.
For accommodations in Springerville, contact The Rode Inn at 928-333-4365 or 877-220-6553. Rooms are $59.95 for single, $69.95 for double - make sure you mention that you’re with the AZ Prowler Group to get this rate. If you have AAA and/or AARP, you may qualify for other discounts. In the event the Rode Inn is booked up by the time you make your reservation, there's the El Jo Lodge just across the street - 928-333-4314.
On Sunday morning, we'll have breakfast and then hit the road for Devil's Highway 2009, running downhill through Alpine, Hannagan's Meadow and the scenic White Mountains. This is one of the best roads for driving in the United States! This 112 mile stretch will take around 3 hours, depending on how skillful or insane a driver you are.
Morenci marks the end of the line - we'll stop there and check out the Freeport-Mcmoran open pit mine and maybe the miners cemetery and dump truck graveyard. Lots of wildlife in this area – deer, bighorn sheep and the occasional stray cow! For lunch, I thought we’d stop at PJ's in Clifton again this year.
Bring a sweater or jacket along since Springerville and the high country get cold in September. Also, bring a 2-way radio and radar/laser detector if you have them. And don't forgot your camera! I'll bring along paper maps for everyone too. If you plan to attend, reply here or email Curt - cstall@cox.net or Larry - prowlertime@cox.net so we know who to expect.
