What better way to celebrate one of the icons of California's surf culture than to head to Doheny Beach State Park in Dana Point and take in more than 200 woodies of all stripes and types. Although dominated by more than two dozen early postwar Fords--Ford's breakthrough car introduced in 1949--there were many different types of woodies on display ranging from hot rod woodies to the wonderful and rare examples like a 1953 International Harvester R-140, quite possibly the largest woodie ever built, in this case, a special build for the US Army Corps of Engineers.

One trend I liked at Doheny Woods was very-stock-appearing woodies running totally updated modern drivetrains. The two best examples? Certainly one was Tom Parson's 1949 Dodge Commercial running a new-gen 5.7-liter Hemi. The other? An audacious 1947 Ford that rode atop the complete frame of an all-wheel-drive 2005 Lincoln Aviator, dubbed the "Woodyator" by designer/builder/owner Lorenzo Pearson. With a license plate that says "47 SUV" and a claimed top speed of 130 MPH, it might very well qualify as the most unusual woodie on the planet.
