HEATH -- The roar of a Dodge Charger next to a Plymouth Duster had fans in lawn chairs grinning Saturday along Ohio 79.

Cars burned out their tires for the Fifth Annual Mopar SuperCruise through Heath.

Fans like father and son Jerry and Cameron Lawrence, of Heath, came to watch the Mopars run.

"There's nothing like the smell of burning rubber," said Jerry Lawrence, 39, of Heath. "It's kind of like watching a history lesson on wheels, seeing all the cars from all the different years."

The cruise-in took place after a day at the races, the 2006 Mopar Nationals, at National Trail Raceway near Hebron.

The races featured Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth muscle cars from the early 1960s to the late '70s.

Many of the cars and their owners were showing off what's under the hood in the parking lot in front of Best Buy in Heath.

A turquoise Plymouth Roadrunner, buffed to a shine, gleamed in the sunset as the band Cezar's Ghost tapped out oldies like "Werewolves of London" on a stage in the parking lot.

A modern Plymouth Prowler in black and purple attested to the revival of the muscle car, a sign that, despite its cost, gasoline still pumps through the arteries of the heart of America.

Jim Jacobs drove all the way from Laporte, Ind., on Saturday morning to see the cars, his first time to Ohio for the cruise since 1991, he said.

Jacobs sat by his orange '74 Plymouth Duster, with a custom built 360-cubic-inch V8 engine made to run on high-octane gasoline.

"I used to race on the oval track," he said, before bumping into another man from Laporte, who recognized his car.

The two began to talk about cars.

"It's a pretty good show out here," Jerry Lawrence said, as the echo of squealing tires could be heard at the stoplight at Putnam Road and Ohio 79.

Among those hearing the echoes were Heath police.
