I had spoken to Bob Haisler at Miller Motors in Wisconsin a few months ago about buying a Max Care extended warranty, but at the time I felt it was just too expensive. I bought my '01 silver just about a year ago from the original owner, Ted Miles of Ted Miles Chrysler Jeep in Atascadero, California. (Great guy by the way. Really worked with me)
When I called Bob Haisler earlier this year, I was hoping that the cat had not yet been put into service since Ted used it for his company vehicle and it still had dealer plates on it. I was disappointed to learn that, although Chrysler was showing me as the only owner, they had an in-service date of January 22nd, 2001, because Ted Miles Chrysler had performed preventative maintenance and recall work on the kat. The way the Max Care warranty is priced is entirely dependent on the in-service date and rather or not you're purchasing the policy while the original factory warranty is in effect. Well, my factory warranty was long gone according to Chrysler, so there was a significant conversion fee that would need to be paid if I purchased the extended warranty. So, as I said before, I decided it was too expensive.
Well, after reading about the various "personality traits" of the car such as broken front shocks, valve train noise, and cracked window regulators, (plus the personal experiences some friends of mine have had with their kats) I really began to obsess over everything that could go wrong and what was it going to cost when it eventually DID go wrong.
And, what really motivated me, was having owned the kat for a year, I am positively sure I will own this car for many years to come. So, my car right now has 8,957 miles on it. My new warranty has a $100.00 per covered repair deductable and covers the car bumper-to-bumper, including a free loaner car, for the next five years or 50,000 miles. Since I only put about twenty-five hundred miles a year on the car (I bought it with 6,400 miles on it) my kat is covered through August of 2011. What a great feeling!
The cost? $2,035.00 or about $400.00 a year. Heck, an altenator or shock replacement would cost that much.
I really encourage anyone who is worried about future repair costs (which are bound to go up as Prowler specific parts become more scarce) to give Bob a call. He's a great guy and still charges Prowler enthusiasts just $50.00 over the cost of the policy. His number is 800-824-1784.
