Ok, so someone asked me last year if I could/would put something together for cruises or whatever during this event.

Hot Air Balloon Launches are normally friday and saturday evenings at 6:00 PM with aDusk - "Runway Lights" Balloon Glow after the balloons return to the airport.

There is also a 6:30 AM saturday and sunday Hot Air Balloon Fly-In. So I guess what I need to know is if there is any interest in anyone coming for this.Would need to line up hotels and cruise routes, not a problem. Would also need to try to get special parking lined up at the fairgrounds, as the normal parking will not work our prowlers, might be difficult.


We could do cruises between launches (lots of boring old Route 66 in the area), or visit Pres. Lincoln sites or I just found out about a new chevy museum(:vomit:):mrgreen::mrgreen:)) we could visit.

Lincoln Illinois, about 170 miles south of Chicago!


I don't know about other Balloon festivals, but this one you can get up close an personal with the balloons and pilots. The evenings you are kept a little ways away during the initial launches, when they come back for the Glow you can wander where ever you want.

The mornings you are only kept away the target areas, can wander where ever else you wish. The second picture we were standing on the runway with balloons floating by within 10 feet of where we were at.


The only thing about an event like this is it is dependant on the weather, winds over 10 knots, 11 or 12 mph and theballoons will not fly.


The Albuquerque New Mexico balloon festival is on my must do list at some point.

Depending on weather predictions usually 40 to sixty balloons.

Hard telling how many this year with the economy, last year was just over 40.
I'm guessing the low numbers were due to last summers gas prices and weather predictions.

It's a long drive for me, but it ant like I have anything better to do. That dose look interesting and would like to get up close and check them out. I love the colors and think I could get a good shot of my car in the foreground. Now that would be worth the drive.

And if somebody buys me a drink then that would really top it off.
However that is a bad time of the year for me. But I would try to make it.

I guess I need to get ahold of the event organizers and see what the posibility is of getting prefered parking. I don't think any of us want to park the kats on a very rough field. I guess the other option would be to leave the cats at the motel and shuttle anyone out there and back with some of my vehicles.

Brian I would want my car to be part of the show. People will be coming from miles around to see the balloon and my car, So My car should be there for all to view,

Now on the other hand you others can park your at the hotel and walk to the runway. (so think about that)

Yes, I believe it is just during balloon flight times, not the whole weekend. I'd have to check if your looking to fly in to be sure.

I don't believe they are marking the runways correctly.:eek2::eek2:

The airport has two runways (really 4 but you know what I mean) that cross approx midpoint of each runway, and thats where they lay out a large red X.

I believe there should be an X at each end of the runway.

I am very excited about you attending our festival. We can make special provisions for you to come in our back gate and enter onto our paved runway. Let me know what you can pay and we would be happy to supply you with a space to display your cars. We will also send you brochures when printed with complete detail on event throughout town.

Not sure what to make of the 'Let me know what you can pay' statement and thats what i questioned her on. Both emails I sent I tried to stress that we are not looking for special display status (except Jerry:mrgreen:).

Just looking for a spot to park without causing damage to the kats.

We can bring you back through another gate we will charge you $5.00 per person as we do everyone else. We just need to know when and what time you will arrive so we will be ready for you. I can give you the road to take off of airport road to enter. Would you want to park where people could view and look at your cars or more secluded? Let me know


Looks like we just need to determine what kind of parking we want, and what kind of activites everyone is interested in doing between morning and evening balloon launches. Guess we also need to find a hotel. Probably just go with a springfield hotel gives a little more options than lincoln. Unless no one wants to get up early enough to make the 30 minute drive to make the 6:30 am balloon launch.

Please give me some ideas and we'll see if we can reach any kind of consenus(sp).

Just checked Lincoln Holiday Inn Express in lincoln only has 5 rooms left, all smoking. :smflame::smflame::smflame:

I'm not sure Sno has set a weekend yet, that would be up to him about combining the events.

If people wanted to come in friday afternoon and do the Friday evening and saturday morning balloon events, then head for sno's mid to late Saturday morning it would be doable. The evenings are balloon launches from the airport and then they come back for a glow off after dark, mornings they launch from the upwind side of the airport then they float across the airport trying to see who can drop a beanbag closest to a target. So you get two different perspectives from the evening and morning launches. The only problem not being there both days is if the wind keeps them from flying one day, you have a chance to catch them the next.


This is about 100 miles from Effingham. :mrgreen::mrgreen:

That might be too hard,,,, our bbq is the 1st weekend every year to coinside with Freeze's Birthday. ( Big Five O this year but please dont ever tell her I said anything ever :biggrin:). Also too much to do at both and too far apart to combine them,, This year the bbq theme is party till Freeze :vomit:,,,,,,, again I said nothing!

Ok, something I forgot to mention earlier.

Comfort Inn did tell me some of the queen rooms were smoking rooms, housekeeping is supposedly going to de-smoke them before checkin.

If smoke really bothers you call early and get one of the non-smoking rooms booked.

Ok, seems like there was a little mixup at Comfort Inn on the booking process.
They were not releasing rooms from the block assigned to me.

I resolved that issue, I think.

The only people I know that have booked are Brent (2 rooms) and Tom (1 Room).
These have now been taken off of the rooms I blocked. They are currently showing 7 left in my block.

If anyone else has booked rooms please let me know so I can call and have them assigned to my block of rooms.

Special parking, stuff to do between launches and some free stuff.

Just one slight change to the event, there is no Sunday morning balloon flyin.

I know Ed told me he was not coming in till late saturday morning. That will only give him one shot at seeing the balloons flying. I realize some of you guys can't get in early enough to see the Friday night launch. If at all possible try to get in early enough on Saturday morning to see the morning flyin also. Gives you two chances to see the balloons flying, it is very dependent on weather if the balloons fly or not.

Let me tell you a little about the suit in witch you will be getting if you decide to take it. at no extra coast to you.

It is a mayoral suit fit off no less then a king, This room comes equipped with a in ground pool with a special hot tub, You will see yourself in the mirrors through out and on the sealing. You will be drowning in drinks from the indoor bar all complementary of course.

Friday night, Balloon launch, probably go to the fairgrounds around 5:00 pm.
Sat morning, Balloon launch, probably go to the fairgrounds around 6:00 am. For those that can roll out of bed that early after a hard night of :beer::beer:.

Sat during the day, either a small winery and lincolns New Salem village or ti Springfield for the Lincoln Museum, depending on outdoor temps and weather.

Saturday night, Balloon launch, probably go to the fairgrounds around 4:30 pm.

There is an arts and crafts show and sale all day saturday and sunday in lincoln along with events at the airport all day saturday, So lots of things to do if'n no one wants to drive.

Premium parking was had by all for the entire event.

I don't think everyone realized how good we had it till Saturday evening rolled around. Friday evening attendance was down, probably due to the weather, and Saturday morning attendance was slim, always is, because not many want to get out of bed at 5:30 to get to the morning flyin at 6:30. Saturday night was a packed event, can take hours to get out of the normal parking areas, took us all of maybe 10 minutes.:tu::tu:

No unfortunately not, one of the event staff told us saturday morning that if we had been there earlier she could have got some of us rides. Have to remember that for next year. :biggrin::biggrin:

You can barely make out the red ribbon of the bean bag that the guy leaning over in the basket is getting ready to throw at the target. The target is the yellow behind the guy on the right in the white hat. This one was fairly close to the center of the target.
