View Full Version : A/C stopped working

I know this is probably not the place nor the forum but I wanted to ask anyway because there is a wealth of knowledge from some of the people here. While I have some ideas of what the problem may be I'd like to have some other opinions.

I have a F150 (40K) and the A/C just went out. When I turn the A/C on I hear the compressor engage and the engine feels the draw but regardless of the fan speed 1-4 it does nothing.

The defroster does not work, the fan only (outside air) does not work. However when you put it on Number 1 fan speed you can feel cold air so it's cooling but it's coming out at the speed of maybe when you exhale.

I'm thinking the blower motor took a dump. I should start with the fuse box to make sure the fuse did not blow for the motor other than that any suggestions before I take it apart?

Do you think it may be the actual "switch"?

Any help is appreciated...... and I thought I could relax this weekend. :cry2:

I would check the fan fuse and and anything to do with the fan if that don't work trade it on a new 09 and it will be fixed

I'll take a look, but Ford decided to place the fuse box where only a yoga instructor can get to it. I will have to con Manda's nephew to get down there and pull the fuse for me.

Yeah the 09 would be the way to go..... you never know stranger things have happened.....although I was really looking into the challanger srt as I really want to go back to a car with 4 doors now that Amanda has the SUV to pull stuff with.

either the blower motor switch is possibly bad,,,,,or the blower motor itself.

I say that since you can feel cold air dropping out. With a/c on,,,,,put your hand around the thicker line coming back to the compressor > if its cold,,,its slugging back freon to the working compressor. Don't over-run in this condition > too much liquid slugging back to the compressor on the low pressure side, can damage it.

Could also have a blend door inside the heater/a/c dash panel box > stuck, broke, or not working properly. Blend doors are sometimes operated by either electric motor,,,,,,OR vacuum lines. Blend door hinges sometimes go bad also,,,,,creating air flow problems for either heat or A/C operation.

Funny you guys should say this because when I turn it on it takes the draw and I can hear what seems to be (I'm thinking it would sound like this if I had to put words to it) a door that is trying to open but is stuck. Without seeing it the sound reminds me of a door that goes past the point of normal operation and does not want to shut again. Another example is an umbrella that gets pushed to far, you know how it bows and when try to bring it back it just does not want to? I'm probably not making sense but that's the sound I hear, almost like it's trying but it's not able to.

One question though if a blend door / hinge was at fault would I not hear the fan blowing? I hear nothing but only feel a ever so gentle whiff of cold air coming out the vents.

I'm planning on taking a closer look tomorrow in the morning.

Thanks guys

George, I believe the Blend Door has to be in a certain position to allow the Fan to function..

You may want to see if there is a fan relay. Normally a dash switch can't handle the load of the fan motor so they install a relay.
