1961 Plymouth Fury 2-door- Radical Custom
Body: Outkast is a contemporary custom ’61 Plymouth Fury constructed from a rust-free 2-door hardtop body sourced in California. The roof panel is chopped 1.5-inches and front windshield is laid back 1-inch. The front and rear glass is flush mounted while the side wing-windows were removed and replaced with 1-piece door glass.
The outside door handles were shaved and custom body lines were added to the doors and front fenders. The fenders were further modified for Jaguar XJS composite headlights. The leading edge of the hood extends 4-inches downward creating a lower and wider opening for a one-off hand-crafted, billet-aluminum grille. The original taillights were shaved from the body and replaced by LED assemblies. All seams, welds, and body lines were smoothed and molded. The underbody was molded, painted body color, and polished front to rear.
Paint: PPG products were used exclusively throughout the project. The body was stripped to bare metal and covered in DP40 metal-etch primer, K36 high-build primer, DBC Bright Lapis Blue Metallic and Sandstone Beige Metallic base coats, and 2082 Stratoclear. The finish was professionally wet sanded and machine buffed to a mirror-like appearance.
Interior: The wraparound dash and door panels and full length center console are hand built. One-off instrumentation was assembled by Classic Instruments. All leatherwork, stitching, and sculpting was performed by Jim McFall or McFall’s Auto Interior.
Chassis: The original floor and frame were removed and replaced by raised flooring for ground clearance and a hand-built 2 x 4” mild-steel square-tube frame. Kugel Komponents were used throughout the suspension including matched front and rear cast-stainless steel control arms. The rear is independent with four-coil-over shocks, inboard disc brakes. It’s fully polished and plated and houses a 3.0:1 gear set. The front features coil-over shocks with rack and pinion steering, and it too, is fully polished and plated. 17 x 8-inch front and 18 x 12-inch rear Budnik Cannon billet aluminum wheels are complemented by 245/45/17 front and 335/35/18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires.
Drivetrain: Outkast is powered by 1968 426ci Hemi engine. All machine work performed legendary Hemi builder Gary Ostrich. The engine features a solid-roller camshaft, a one-off electronic fuel-injection unit from Street Performance, and an Electromotive crank-trigger ignition system. The polished billet-aluminum Miezere electric water pump circulates coolant through a four-core Griffin aluminum radiator. Sanderson Block-Hugger headers dump into a custom-made 2.5-inch exhaust system with turbo-tube mufflers. The entire system is silver ceramic coated. The transmission is a 727 Torqueflight Streetfighter unit from TCI with a 2,500 stall torque converter. Polished-stainless button-head fasteners are used throughout the entire vehicle.
Misc: Since its completion, Outkast was shown at eight national-type events. Among its awards, it received Grand Champion Street Machine at the Car Craft Nationals in 2007, a Fine-Nine Award at Darryl Starbird’s 2008 event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and an ISCA World-of Wheels CASI Cup in 2008. It has also been featured in two national publications; Super Rod Magazine and Mopar Collectors Guide.
Outkast is fully functional for street use but remains fully-detailed for the upcoming show season. For further information please contact Mike Buzzello at mmbuzz@cox.net (mmbuzz@cox.net) or by phone at 402-659-5323.
