our old buddy Randy and I were discussing doing some under the hood painting on our cars and Randy thought it might be a great idea to have a Plenum, Headlight assembly covers, and the Radiator covers as items we can provide to friends that are wanting to get hese items custom painted but don't want to have their car out of commission while the paint is being done.
I was thinking of ordering a new Plenum, rad cover and headlight assembly covers to have airbrushed. once I installed them after the paint, I would have these items off my car available. Rather than sell them, I could offer them to another person to do the same for them , then they would have a full set for the next person... and so on...
any suggestions or ideas...???
I also have a set of headlights and front bumpers...

I like the idea, and would be interested (of course :) ) I think the cover over the battery would be a good thing also (although doesn't come with the car so no core changeout requried).
Love the idea, but don't think its right that you just fork up the exchange for nothing. I think we should figure out a methodology to recoup your cost of the outlay of the core.

If I could eventually get back a portion of what the parts would sell for....That would be nice....
i'm having trouble getting the part number for the Rad cover item...

Jim,
I think there's a tonne of folks interested in the plenum mod. I agree with Randy that you guys should be able to come up with a viable 'system'.
Good luck!

I found the part numbers..
they are

4865 239AB crossmember radiator
i'll request a quote from Randy on these items and report back..

Jim, there is no difference in the plenum for the model years is there? I think there MAY be a SLIGHT difference, but one that would probably be grinded out anyways for the prep to paint.
Also, do you have any website info or pics you could post / e-mail of your proposed airbrusher's work?
If we get this project to implementation stage (and see no reason why not, just a matter of symantecs and putting a price on it), let me be the first to call "sloppy seconds" :) You all can have thirds and fourths.

When you paint your plenum , you may want to paint these parts also.

I think the 97's and maybe the 99's ( not sure ) have a different plenum but all the rest of the years are the same....
Norms info is awesome..
This picture shows the items I have marked with an orange pc of paper...
plenum
radiator crossmember
hood latch crossmember
headlight covers.
these represent a good portion of the under hood surfaces...

I just checked and the Painter doesn't have a wesite for his company.... They are just a small business that has been kept busy by the word of mouth and haven't had to advertize or look for customers.. I will get in touch with them on Tuesday to see if they can send me some pictures of their work I can post....

Paul, aka Kruisin Kat,
has made an offer to let us use his plenum for the initial start of this project...
here is my intentions....I am going to send Paul the shipping cost to send it to me. I will then swap my stock unit with Pauls and send my stock unit out to be painted along withe the headlight covers, rad crossmember, and latch crossmember. I am going to purchase these new if the price isn't to high. once everything has been painted and installed. i will then be ready to send all these items out to the next person.
If everyone does the same thing then Paul will get back exactly what he started with plus the crossmembers, and we will all be able to drive our cars while the painting is being done. We will have to make sure that the painters turn around these items quick as Paul is looking to get his own done late this year and will need it back.
after mine is complete I can post some pictures of the work to see if anyone wants my paint shop to do theirs....
Kruisin Kat are you ok with this plan ?
Thoughts, ideas ? lets hear it

The Plenums and radiator supports are different on the 97's.
99's and up are the same other than the support rod hole in the early 99's radiator support.
I have a plenum that I purchased do do this mod. I did a bunch of reading and researching and it seems the Dodge 3.5 HO plenum is the same other than the badge that is stuck to it. That is what I purchased and it does appear to be exactly the same plenum. The Prowler uses it's own unique throttle body but that is a separate piece from the plenum itself.
If my memory serves me (it fails from time to time!), it was Marty Usher over on the POA that dyno'ed them both and found no difference in performance, and he has the Dodge 3.5 HO plenum on his stroker motor.
(I may have to go back and re-read the information, it's been a number of months since I did the research and bought the plenum).

since I intend to remove the prowler badge anyway, i'm wondering if a visit to the scrap yard may be in order. i may be able to pick one up cheap, save the shipping costs and eliminate the hassel of you shipping yours all around the place...its a holiday here today so everything is closed... i will go on the hunt tomorrow....

Jim, Sorry I don't have a digital camera. I always seem to find something that takes the money first.
Plenum looks exactly like the one on the Prowler. The badge is in the same location but reads: "3.5 LITER" in gold letters and "HIGH OUTPUT" in red letters on a black background (on the one I have on the bench anyway).

Randy,
I got your email but was too tired this morning at 6:30am to type anything that made sense...I'll check with the paint shop for you on this. I don't think they can fit any extra work because they have a car show at their business coming up July 22nd. They bumped back a couple of cars to get mine done for the show because they figured it was a great opportunity to show off their work by having a Prowler....
I will ask them and see what they say....

I haven't had a chance to look around yet... Work has been on my nerves and I've been busy trying to keep the paint job a secrete from my wife...lol.,, I hope to get on it this week. Just an update on this under the hood mod project....
I think what I will do is purchase a new Plenum, rad crossmember, hood latch crossmember and headlight covers in the fall, probably the first of October. This will give me time to get the painting done by November first when my baby goes into storage for the winter. I am going with the new Plenum because I am limited in the mechanical ability department and afraid if I don't get one that is exactly the same it may cause me agony....as Dirty Harry always said " You got to know your limitations"....
obviously I will have all the stock parts left over and will decide then what would be a good plan to offer them to others wanting to do the same mods. I will also have a complete set of headlight assemblies and a set of front bumpers.
I have taken on to much debt with this paint job so the under the hood project will have to be put off for 2 or 3 months.
one idea I had was to get all my parts painted here and sending them to whomever wants the mod to put right on their own car , then send me theirs back to me..
any ideas, i value them all....

Hey Jim,
Sorry, must have missed something. I thought you're getting your new flame job and that they were going to do your under the hood paint also.
I have been thinking and I know there are times that I have my kat down for a couple weeks (such as now while I'm on vacation up in the smoky mountains ... beautiful) and my guess is that it would probably take 2 weeks or so for the sanding and painting. So I'm considering using my own core pieces to do it ??
halicat
07-13-2006, 09:37 AM
hey Randy,
The painter couldn't do the underhood hood painting as he had bumped some other work to fit my car in ... they wanted the Prowler done for their car show that is going on in 9 days....
on top of that, the owners mother just died on sunday, and this being a family business, father, mother and 2 kids... it has effected their schedule... The Prowler was supposed to go in on Tuesday but now isn't going in untill tomorrow. The funeral is today and they have closed shop for the day.
I'm hoping they will find time to do the spearker box for Friday.
all this being said....I wouldn't buy new items but I'm afraid that a two week wait with the car apart wouldn't go well with my limited skills.... I'm somewhat comfortable removing the old plenum and installing the new one the same day.... thanks for Pumpkins great instructions... but I fear the 2 week down time and that my feeble mind may forget some of the details.... It would be some much easier to do the swap.....and it would be great if a set of parts were available for others to do the same...
is this making any sense ??...lol

07-13-2006, 12:37 PM
Jim, I sure hope they lowered the price if they aren't doing the plenum, or at least are planning to do it for you later!
Are they going to flame the speaker cover?
Krzy Kat, You have PM.
halicat
07-13-2006, 01:14 PM
I am going to meet with Mark in the morning when I drop off the car... The plenum was not part of the original deal but I will be able to get the speaker cover flamed when they do the car. I hope the cover doesn't get caught in customs to long...
they are also doing the headlights at the same time..
The under the hood painting will likely be done in October or November.
The car goes into hibernation from Nov. 1 to April 1.....

Halicat or Krzy Kat, FYI saw a brand new plenum just listed on Ebay.
A used one at a salvage yard might be less but the prep time on a new one will be less (oily film inside a used one).

Heres an idea:
If someone wins the bidding, I would be willing to buy it from them , Get it painted then switch it with my stock unit.. we can then start using mine as a donor for others to get their own painted....I don't think I would want to pay anymore than $275, maybe $300...
Just an idea...
actually I could get the donor painted by my airbrush guy so it could be ready for a quick swap for someone else...

Jim, Check with a salvage yard on used pricing. I bet you can get one for under $100.
I got mine (including shipping) off Ebay for $29.99!
Brian (TooHipCat) checked with a local yard and they told him if he wanted to remove it, it would be $10. (he has the 1st generation plenum being a 97).
New is nice but not necessary, especially when on a budget!

One NEW Factory MoPar OEM intake manifold ............Fits the Plymouth Prowler years 97 98 99 and the LHS Concorde 300M Intrepid with either the 3.2 or 3.5 liter engine.........
I thought they are all the same? Even Plymount 2001, 2001 and Chrysler 2001, 2002 ?? (I thought the only difference was on 97' that the plenum had a different finish on it - smoother).

great !
as far as value goes....
a new "Prowler" one can be bought through Randy for $463 plus shipping...I'm thinking anything less than $175 would be an exceptional deal..
keep in mind KK has a great point about going to the wrecking yard... obviously one with low mileage for less that $50 is a great bargain...
my mechanical ability is very limited so I am more comfortable with a new part...

Hey Jim, Congratulations on the winning bid. I'm sorry I didn't read this thread before now. I really wasn't paying attention the first time I put a bid in on it . . . I didn't realize it wouldn't fit my 2001 until after I had already bid on it (doh!). That's why I backed way off.
Glad you won it! I,too, can't wait to see the final product.

Hey Scott,
You gave me a panic attack... because if it wasn't going to fit your 2001 then it wasn't going to fint my 2000........
I did a little research and feel that i'm going to be ok.....heres what i have found out...
"The plenums from any 3.5 HO Intrepid, Concorde, LHS or 300M will fit the Prowler. I am not sure if 98 was the first model year they switched to the higher output engine or 1999. If the plenum looks like it is the same as the plenum except for the badging - it will fit. I was told there there is a slight diference internally between the Prowler plenum and the others but it makes no diffence on the power output. I checked mine with dyno runs before and after the switch."
I think i'm ok, I may have to use the Prowler throttle body though...

I received my new plenum today and rushed it right over to Travis at the paint shop, the car is going in on Wednesday to get everything painted.
He will be preping the plenum by sanding off the letters and ridges to give it the smoothed, shaved look and provide with a better surface to do the art work.
pictures when I get it back...

Glad that our instructions helped, any leftover parts? It sure looks sweet but here is another thing you should do for a couple of bucks.
Here is a pic of them, they are freeze plugs that I polished and fasten wooden dowels on the freeze plugs and the dowel sat on the bolts. I also did my support bars from 5/8 in aluminum stock, polished and they cost $10 for four. Hpe this helps.
