I was over to the paint shop today to check on my lights and was offered a complete custom airbrush paint job for the Kat for $****
This guy is a real artist... he has done a couple of cars in the real fire style that are stunning.
We decided on Blue fire and was promiced "perfection", nothing less. he will incorporate the skulls into the design as I requested..
this picture is similar to what they will do..

http://www.prowltalk.com/ppost/data/500/Cover.jpg

he offered to do under the hood as well....Its a hard decision for me as i will have to borrow the money and probably fight with the wife for a week...

I need your opinions...

Jim: That looks nice..will it be ghosted? Not sure on pricing since we have NO flames..heh...

halicat

we talked about fading it to ghost flames as it progressed to the rear of the car..

Hali, That price seems about right (is that in Canadian?). If you figure the labor involved in the prep and paint and then clear coat over it all plus the cost of materials.

One thing for sure, the sample looks awesome, the kat will be killer!

they told me that it would take at least a week, maybe two.....They are giving me a deal, in exchange for me presenting it at the car shows as an example of their work....I think this is the offer i can't refuse. Mark will be calling me today to agree on a date to start the car....

Hey Jim!

It's up to you of course but just be careful. I know how exciting it can be with mods...not that I have a huge list. Once you get started...you can't stop!

You have to ask yourself...could you possibly get sick of it? Is it worth the money? Worst of all...God forbid...if you ever have to sell...would the buyer like it? I know...I try to never think of that one either.

It does look great and I'm sure it would look great on your black kat! :tu:

Need additional ideas? Here is a link to the guy that's spraying my Weekender...hopefully as we speak!

www.krazykustoms.com

Go to his gallery section. Check out the Prowler he did for the good people at "House of Kolor".

Like the pics on his site and the one you posted...it just doesn't do justice to the final product. You have to see it in person.

Good luck on your decision.

OOOOH...that's different! Ask them if they can drop it to $2,000 US. I mean they should realize just how expensive advertising is. Why should you do it for free?

halicat
06-29-2006, 06:45 AM
Hey Brian,

Thanks for the link , I will check it out....

I've gone through all the senarios regarding this decision and feel comfortable with the airbrush work. the plenum and under the hood items as well. I've seen some of this guys finished work and know he does top class paint. as far as getting tired of it... I'm pretty confident that it will be awesome in my eyes for many years. The Day i drilled the holes in the trunk to install the Infinity spoiler was the day I knew that this car would always be mine... i've looked at an SSR more out of curiosity than intent and once i drove it, i knew it didn't hold a candle to my Kat..

Thanks for the input... I really appreciate it....

prowl on !

Jim

Hali, That is a very good price but how many show's are you talking about? Local or a distance? If you're happy with the price and hassle of doing the shows, go for it!

There was a Prowler owner locally that a chrome shop did his wheels and grill for free in exchange for him displaying his car at a vendor show/event.

I think the Flames will always be cool just like the kat they are on!

halicat
06-29-2006, 07:35 AM
Thanks KK,

None of the shows are more than 3 hours drive and most are less than an hour away. There is only 2 this year and 6 total for next....any trophies or awards will be mine to keep.

I don't know who is more excited about this.. the paint shop or me..

Kruisin Kat
06-29-2006, 08:05 AM
Hali, I think that is alot of shows to do on top of the $$. If you have to do that many I would want a better price.

I think doing the job for the cost of materials only sounds more in line for that kind of commitment.

They are probably going to use the cost of the job as an advertising write off anyway.

Go for it. We had a few items air brushed and more on the way. We have a local air brush guy and he is great. When you add up the price of paint and all the work that price is real good. The price is always on the painters art ability. I really like the realistic flames, a lot of colors.

One last thing Jim...
When I spoke to the guy that's shooting my Weekender on the site I listed above. I asked him how he protects some of his fine airbrushing artwork. He told me he protects it with that clear auto film.
I'm not sure if it was the same stuff that Dreamcast was talking about.

I can ask him what brand he prefers if you'd like.

Brian

We have all our air brushing, shot with 5 coates of clear. Than we have it wet sanded, than buffed. Comes out sweet. All his big projects are done this way. Another way of doing it.

halicat
06-29-2006, 05:51 PM
My guy actually said "4 or 5 coats of clear then a sand and buff....I've never heard of the film product except for clear bra and rocker pannel protection...

I would like to know more about it though... post the info Brian, there's no such thing as too much information ...

Dreamcast18
06-29-2006, 05:56 PM
Clear auto film etc and clear bra are the same stuff. Its called a bra when applied to the front of the car. You can apply the film anywhere on the car (e.g., deck lid as I had).

For those in non-California whether, you might wanna take a look @ the NEW 3M clear film (NEW-> not the old one..they are much clearer). The 3M has additional weather proofing for those crazy weather out in the mid-west and east.

California folks can go with non-3n non-weather proofing versions.

I expect to get a call from the paint shop today to finalize the details... if it goes, the car will be finished by Aug 1st.

I dropped into the paint shop today and finished the deal. I will be taking in my baby next week for the full airbrush job, front to back. They are going to do my headlights at the same time and hopefully my speaker box as well. They will put 6 coats of clear over the finish product.... he says the usually apply 3 coats then sand out about 1 1/2 to get it perfectly smooth. then they apply 3 more coats and do the buff. I will have the car back by July 21st.

The wife is going to kill me..

oh well you only die once...

Jim - that sounds AWESOME !!!! He's going to do the REAL flames like that pic of his artwork with the blue color scheme you've been using?

Is this the same person doing the under-engine paint ?? I wanted to keep mine pretty clean, maybe real flames would be just the ticket I'm looking for.

July 21st ... let me explain what this means to others who don't have a clue yet ... JIMBO wants to have it done for the calendar !!!!!!

They will be blue flames on all surfaces hood, trunk, sides etc. He is going to paint the A arms and other aluminum front suspension pcs black, My intention is to go for the chrome calipers from Gary at some point. He tells me this morning that he may have time to get the speaker box done but definately not under the hood.

Jim, I've always loved the looks that these airbrush guys come up with and honestly think your's will turn out as good as any I've seen. Think that paint job's going to give George a run his money on paint schemes.

Would love to see pictures of progress points and maybe even action shots of them doing the job. Just morbid curiousity on how they take it from start to finish.

halicat
07-05-2006, 05:30 PM
funny you should say that...
when i was talking to them yesterday, the airbrush guy asked me if i was going to be around during the work process....I told him "probably not, I don't think I could handle seeing my pride and joy all taken apart, sanded and looking like a mess."... he said it would be nice if I waited untill it was finished so they could surprize me and get my first reaction.....just like TV....
I am going to see if they will take some progress shots for me to see later...

I don't think it will ever rival Georges beauty....Conqueroo must be a sight to see in person... the pictures are hypnotic....

Krzy Kat
07-05-2006, 08:54 PM
I've been to his house and seen his beauty torn apart in his garage. To see the color scheme in the sun is very nice for sure. And I think more went into his paint scheme (and quite a bit more money spent on it), but that preview color you showed ... that over the whole car ... is going to be a sight to see.

Krzy Kat
07-20-2006, 01:41 PM
send me pics please. I'm leaving in a couple hours, so might not get a chance to reply real soon. But yeah, you know I'm interested in that. Trying to talk Gary into sending me some scrap diamond mesh pieces from grilles to put in the headrest. He asked me how I would do it, kinda hoping he'd just knock it out for me when he sends me the chrome headrest pieces.

Gary had the headrest and grille ready for me 2 weeks ago, but I told him I wasn't at home, so he sent them to someone who was in ASAP need of them, telling me he'd have mine ready for me when I got back (NOW). I'll fire him off an e-mail also.

Or can you wait untill saturday evening when i get home from the show ?

Krzy Kat
07-20-2006, 02:13 PM
I can wait, thanks.

And no offense to george at all. And I plan to visit him within the next month also ... but .... I still say that if your paintjob is what I have in my mind, that it will give his some serious paintjob competition.

I saw the one pic of the blue flame from skull and that over the whole car I think would be very impressive if done right (and I assume it will be done right :))

halicat
07-20-2006, 02:21 PM
We had a last minute change of plans....

The blue is out and they have done the flames in red/orange/yellow.... from the sample I saw today i'm glad they did... it is in my opinion 11 out of 10....

wait till you see it.....it is absolutley stunning....

Krzy Kat
07-20-2006, 02:29 PM
OK, now I'm totally confused. I had something definate in mind keeping with your black - light blue color, almost neon flame blue. Now ?? Now I have to just wait and see, so used to seeing you with that color scheme that black and red/orange .... big change. I know it'll turn out good though ;) They're doing that over the whole car or just flames from front to side panels and hood ?

halicat
07-20-2006, 02:39 PM
I wanted to stick with the blue theme but when the artist says he's unsure if the blue will look as nice as the orange/red...... I let him go with what he knows......
they have done the entire car, including the headlight reflectors, yes there is flame in those also,... they are also doing the Real Rod speaker box I just got....

I'm wearing a condom when i go to see it for the first time.... just in case...lol 8)

Krzy Kat
07-20-2006, 02:44 PM
hehe - I love it. And I agree with you, when the artist say's that, you have chosen them for good reason and value their opinion.

Now for the big question ... will the BOSS approve of it ? I hope she loves it as much as you do (and doesn't cut your nads off when she finds out) HEY - you should have it at the car show and just take her to the car show and say "HEY - see my car could look like that with a little work " and give her a little surprise.

halicat
07-20-2006, 02:48 PM
she is going to panic... she thinks that it has only gone it to have the lights painted and a buff job........lol

She said she isn't going to the car show so I'm just going to show up at home with it done....

everyone that attended got a ballot to vote on the Peoples choice....
The trophy winner and $500 went to a 63 gallaxy 500 in mint shape with the original paint job...cream color...
a couple of people came by after the show and said they voted for me..

There was an awesome Chev truck there with a blown 409 engine in it.... that was my pick...

my car looks best in the sun and goes from a red to a bright orange...I might have won if we would have had some sunshine..

it was fun.. :tu:

I have a buddy who is a cobbler, and one time he had to sell someone some stingray hides, jet black - you know - with the pebble grain of the ray in the middle of it - someone was using it for seats , think something like that would be SHARP on your car.

Just ordered my clear side markers today, hopefully coming in at same time as my new chrome grill :)

wow ....that would be cool... I was thinking of a black leather with some type of sewn in flame design... my fat ass is wrinkling up the leather on the seats, its starting to look worn...

what type of grill are you gettting ?

Nice :tu: I wanted the side markers badly for the BLK PRWL (they look awesome on Black when I saw it at past events), but for $200++, had to pass and go with smoked ones instead.

I concur. Short of having a complete chromed grill, its the best money for value mod!

oh, another dumb suggestion..either chrome the front suspension...OR..power coat it black! The kewl thing abt having a black car is you can either go chrome or powder coat on most of the exposed parts of a kat. Powder coat doesn't look that good on other colors. Again..just my 0.02

p.s did i mention the headlights look great?

My plans are to do the suspension black.. they were supposed to do that but I asked them to skip it and do the speaker box instead , we were running out of time... I'm going to go for the chrome calipers and knuckles from Gary..and get travis to airbrush some flames on the inner barrels of the wheels...

Jim, The grill looks great. It's amazing how much difference that makes.

I have it done on my purple kat and can't ever see having a different grill.
(and the price can't be beat!)

i agree... I'm not even sure that a chrome stock grill would look any better...

This one from Gary is nice.... but $1200 is much to expensive...

I was thinking that some day I may fab one like the M&L (?) grill that is no longer available. I can't see it costing more an a $100 to make and then have it chromed ($).

Jim, this is what I've purchased:

http://www.prowlerproducts.com/photo%20pages/MeshGrill.html

for $795 ... when you can sell your original for say $250 ... I think a very cost effective upgrade. And if I can get some spare of the diamond grill insert and use it in conjunction with my chrome headrest covers ... I think I'll have something.

I thought about going candy on my headlights, but #1) KNOW it won't give as good effect as yours, and #2) with the chrome theme might look better the way they are.

Agree - flamed covers are a little tacky for your setup.

I do have to take my trailer in for paint, so I am trying to think, what else needs painted candy, to make it easier and cheaper to do it now than later ... (front end will definately be chromed on mine). But maybe I do the engine compartment in candy and chrome and skip flames on it ??? thoughts ???

That is a very nice grill...and if you can combine the same type mesh with the headrests..... sweeeeeet....

I would leave the lights... it will go very nice with the chrome...you may want to think about one of those filler panels for over the battery area, then get it painted along with the headlight cobers, & cross members...and leave the plenum for another time...just my thoughts...

cnote has chromed the rock guards on the back fenders and the rear mudflaps.. i think that looks awesome....

lord.... when will it end...lol
